Planning your first multi-day hike
A multi-day hike combines stages, accumulating fatigue, weather and resupply. Start with a modest plan and a clear way to shorten it. This helps you learn your pace with the load you will actually carry.
Connect stages and overnight stops
Use your experience of loaded walking and include ascent, terrain and breaks. Confirm accommodation or permitted camping places in advance. Ask what bedding is needed: indoor stays and tent trips can require very different equipment.
Plan supplies and test the pack
Mark verified drinking-water points and shop opening times. Plan food by section. Share group equipment and agree what to do if delayed. Pack everything, including water and food, then weigh it. A trial walk reveals pressure points and restricted movement.
Before and after the trip
Keep rainwear, map and snacks accessible. Avoid starting the first stage too late after travelling. Save offline maps and leave your plan with someone you trust. Air and dry equipment when conditions allow. Afterwards, note how stages, meals and pack weight worked. Improving a familiar system is easier than repeatedly starting with untested items.
