Day-hike packing checklist

A checklist makes preparation easier. Adapt it to season, terrain and the group's needs. A short walk and a long day with substantial ascent require different reserves.

Clothing and protection

  • Tested footwear and suitable socks.
  • Walking clothes plus a warmer layer for stops.
  • Rain and wind protection matched to the forecast.
  • Headwear and sun protection as needed.

Water, food and navigation

Plan water for the chosen sections and verify refill points beforehand. Bring practical food and a reserve for delays. Save an offline map, check batteries and consider your return if the phone fails. A headlamp remains useful even when you expect to finish in daylight.

Final check

Add suitable first aid, personal medication, identification, money and a rubbish bag. Protect your phone and spare clothes from rain. Remove unnecessary duplicates and keep frequently used items accessible. Try the pack with water and food inside. Leave your route and return plan with someone you trust, then update the checklist after the hike using what you learned.
